Luo Jianbin, honorary director of the editorial department of journal bearings, academician of Tsinghua University, conquers the world-class problems in Tribology

The clock points to eight in the morning. In a small office on Tsinghua campus, Luo Jianbin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University, has been at his desk for a long time. Seeing the reporter coming, he immediately got up and said with a smile, "welcome, welcome." Gentle and humble.

The early summer sunlight slants in from the window and falls on the desk, where the latest English professional books and tribology research reports spread. Behind the whiteboard covered with his recent work schedule, dense.

"Tribology is an interdisciplinary subject, which studies the friction behavior of object surface. When friction occurs, it is often accompanied by wear. Friction and wear will cause energy consumption and bring losses to equipment, devices and materials. It is found that about 30% of the world's primary energy is consumed in friction every year, about 80% of mechanical parts fail due to wear, and about 50% of fatal accidents of mechanical equipment are caused by lubrication failure and excessive wear. " Qi Jianbin explained the importance of his fascinating scientific research work“ China is a big manufacturing country, with short service life of mechanical equipment and many low-end high energy consuming equipment, which causes huge waste every year due to friction and wear. "

In nearly 40 years of scientific research career, the world's top Tribologists have been looking for the answer to the same question, that is, how to reduce the friction coefficient and energy consumption to make the green development of human society possible.

In 1978, Luo Jianbin, from the countryside of Shaanxi Province, was admitted to the material Department of Northeast University. After graduation, he entered Xi cable factory as a technician. In his work, a phenomenon attracted his attention: "the cable factory has a process called drawing copper wire. Copper wire drawn in summer is easy to oxidize and discolor, becoming waste. My workers and I began to study how to reduce the temperature of copper wire, gradually became interested in lubrication, and published our first academic paper. " From then on, Luo Jianbin became interested in tribology. After that, he obtained a master's degree from Department of metallurgy, Xi University of architecture and technology, and a doctor's degree from Department of precision instruments and mechanics, Tsinghua University.

Over the past 30 years, Luo Jianbin and his team have made unremitting efforts to solve key problems, and achieved one result after another: they have developed a new nano scale lubricating film thickness measuring instrument, and put forward the concept of "film lubrication state" for the first time in the world, filling the theoretical gap of elastohydrodynamic lubrication and boundary lubrication, We boldly explored the problems of super smooth and polishing in the basic application field, thus solving a series of technical problems for industrial development.

In the eyes of outsiders, the road of scientific research is plain sailing. But Luo Jianbin said, there are ups and downs, there are hardships.

"For example, we have been conducting research on super slip since 1996, but there has been no significant progress. Until 2008, a student accidentally added yogurt to the experimental machine, which led to the super slippery phenomenon in the acid. Once on a business trip to Hangzhou, I took a sip of water shield soup. I think it's slippery and interesting. And then I found out it was super slippery Luo Jianbin told these stories to the reporter with great interest: "in fact, each of our studies has a long span, with countless failures in the middle. The most important thing in scientific research is perseverance. " In addition to this tenacity, he has been able to overcome the world-class problems in the field of tribology again and again, and lead the team to the international forefront step by step, because he has "tricks" to find.

The first secret is that in order to do first-class scientific research, we must persist in tackling high-risk and difficult problems“ The probability that scientific research can't be done is 90%, and the probability of being done is only 10%. Failure is a normal phenomenon, success is a small probability. If every project can succeed, it can only show that its risk is very low and it is not worth investing. " Luo Jianbin asked students to "jump up and pick peaches" when doing scientific research.

After anchoring his research direction, he attached importance to "concentration" and "meditation"“ Doing scientific research often needs to think deeply, find out the deep-rooted factors hidden in it, and need quiet and in-depth thinking. We should have a persistent pursuit and not be in a hurry for success. " In Luo Jianbin's office, a picture with the words "ten years on the bench, articles should not be empty" is very conspicuous. For many years, he has strictly required students to publish no more than three papers a year. The purpose is to calm students down, ensure the quality of papers, and cultivate students' rigorous scientific research spirit.

In recent years, in addition to immersing himself in the laboratory, Luo Jianbin has appeared more and more in factories, workshops and production lines. After the first-class achievements are made, we must go out of the laboratory, which is the greatest value of scientific research workers in his eyes. Today, his team has gathered talents from three aspects, some focusing on theoretical research, some good at tackling key technologies, and some focusing on industrial promotion“ In our country, after a lot of achievements are completed, a high-level paper or a national award will end, which is the biggest waste of achievements. Calm down to make the results, but don't get stuck in the lab. You have to let it flow to industry to really serve human development. " Luo Jianbin said.

At the end of the interview, Luo Jianbin led the reporter to the State Key Laboratory of tribology under his office. Over the years, he has grasped more macroscopically and less front-line operations, but he is willing to stay in the laboratory as soon as he has time every day.

At present, 50% to 60% of the world's top papers in the field of super skating come from his team. But Luo Jianbin said that was not enough: "doing scientific research is the best way for me to contribute to the country, and it also makes me feel honored. We need to work harder to make Chinese people do their best in the field of tribology. "
